Too Close for this Fat Man
by The Normal Fan
November 7, 2004
If Oklahoma keeps playing games like Saturday, I am going to be forced to go to the doctor to see why every time Oklahoma gets behind to someone they shouldn't. My left arm starts hurting and I have trouble keeping my heart from racing. I know that it has nothing to do with me being overweight and that I love eating fried foods. During the first half of the game Saturday, you would have thought that Oklahoma did not know what defense was, much less have a defense that can win championships. Texas A&M scored at will, whether on offense or special teams. Now lets be honest, who did not know that on fourth and one that coach Fran would not fake a punt. The second half was much, much better. Lance Mitchell, and Dan Cody shined, to the point where Cody had to set out for awhile to keep from passing out. The offense looked good again and for the most part moved the ball up and down the field. What can be said about Jason White that has not already been said? He is truly a field general and not only handled the crowd noise, but kept control off the offense. Oklahoma had no turnovers and no offensive penalties. I have not heard anything official but I am willing to bet that Adrian Peterson has a shoulder injury and may have had it since the Texas game. I do not look for any news about it to come from the University, since they have a history of being tight lipped about injuries. Remember Josh Heupel during the 2000 season, or Jason last year. One way to tell for sure is next weekend. If Peterson is pulled before Oklahoma is up by 14, then he is hurt and they are trying to rest and rehab his shoulder. Does this season seem familiar? Close wins to OSU, and Texas A&M, not to mention George W. Bush winning a close election, along with little respect from the sports broadcast gurus. Am I the only one who sees this year is close to 2000. No I am not saying the National Championship is ours, I learned my lesson last year. I am just saying the years are similar. Sooners, NOW is the time to Finish. The Normal Fan Top 10 1. USC 2. OU 3. Auburn 4. Wisconsin 5. Georgia 6. Texas 7. California 8. Michigan 9. Virginia 10. Utah

| AP - Recap |
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- This one was much tougher, but far sweeter, for Oklahoma.
Jason White threw five touchdown passes, including the decisive one with 6:43 left, and the second-ranked Sooners overcame Texas A&M's explosive offense and special teams trickery for a 42-35 victory Saturday.
Oklahoma handed Texas A&M a loss for the ages last season -- 77-0, the worst in the 108-year history of Aggies football. But the rematch was a battle from start to finish for the Sooners (9-0, 6-0 Big 12).
White, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, was 19-of-35 for 292 yards, taking control of the offense as the 22nd-ranked Aggies swarmed to star freshman running back Adrian Peterson.
Peterson still managed to run for 101 yards and a touchdown on a tough 29 carries, his ninth straight 100-yard game. He went to the locker room on Oklahoma's go-ahead drive with an apparent arm injury, but returned to help the Sooners run the clock down on their last possession.
The Aggies (6-3, 4-2) finished the game without their best offensive weapon. Reggie McNeal left with an apparent injury in the third quarter after throwing for 213 yards and two touchdowns and running for a score.
With the Aggies trailing 35-28, McNeal was relieved by Ty Branyon. The former walk-on led Texas A&M on a long drive with five completions, but the march stalled at the Sooners 4.
Already having used a faked punt to score a touchdown, Aggies coach Dennis Franchione pulled another fast one on the Sooners. A&M set up for a field goal, but holder Chad Schroeder took the snap, rolled left and flipped a TD pass to Joey Thomas to tie the game.
White, Peterson and the Sooners went right to work getting the lead back. Peterson converted a third down with a tackle-breaking 8-yard run and the Sooners were aided by a pass interference call.
On third-and-10 at the Aggies 39, White stepped up and away from pressure to deliver a strike down the middle to Mark Bradley, who slipped a tackle at the 15 and went in for a 42-35 lead.
A&M and its little-used quarterback got one more shot with just over a minute left and the ball at the 13.
Branyon scrambled and passed the Aggies to the Sooners 33 with 9 seconds left and no timeouts. His first Hail Mary went out of the end zone, and his final heave was tipped and fell just out of the reach of Schroeder in the end zone.
The Aggies showed just how far they have come since last season's 4-8 record, twice taking a 14-point lead on the Sooners in the first half and scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions.
But the Aggies couldn't shake the Sooners, who took A&M's best shots and trailed by 28-21 at the half.
Much like last week, when the Aggies turned the ball over three times and let Baylor snap their six-game winning streak, Texas A&M couldn't deal with prosperity.
The Aggies turned the ball over three times in the first 6:10 of the second half, including two fumbles deep in their own territory. White followed the fumbles with touchdown passes.
His 2-yard toss off play action to James Moses gave the Sooners a 35-28 lead, their first of the day, midway through the third quarter.
But just when it seemed the Sooners had seized momentum, the Aggies got a spark from the most unexpected source. Branyon had thrown only 17 passes, all in garbage time, but he went 7-for-12 for 72 yards and ran for 38 yards.
The Aggies stopped Oklahoma on its first possession, took over on their 24, and began the first of several long marches. McNeal put the Aggies on top, rolling to his left and finding Terrence Murphy in the front of the end zone for 18 yards.
In one drive, the Aggies had more yards (76) than they had last year (54) all game against the Sooners.
Were these really the same Aggies that lost to Baylor in overtime last week? It was more like 2002, when McNeal as a freshman threw four TDs against the Sooners and the Aggies knocked off the No. 1 team in the country 30-26.
Just when it looked like Oklahoma had forced A&M's first punt, the Aggies took a huge gamble and hit the jackpot in the second quarter.
On a fourth-and-1, punter Jacob Young took two steps and chucked a short pass to Earvin Taylor, who got a great block from Jason Jack to get the first down, then broke a couple of tackles and sprinted down the sideline for a 71-yard touchdown.
The teams combined for 626 yards in the first 30 minutes. Their final combined total was 922 yards. |

| SportsTicker - Recap |
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- Jason White's latest Heisman Trophy-caliber performance was just enough for second-ranked Oklahoma at Kyle Field.
White tossed a school record-tying five touchdowns, including a go-ahead score with 6:43 remaining, as the Sooners rallied from three 14-point deficits to edge No. 22 Texas A&M, 42-35, in a wild Big 12 Conference clash.
"He's the best," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said of White. "You can say all you want about him - his toughness, resilience and he's talented. He sits in there, you see it all the time, and he stays calm. He makes plays that matter and you see it every week."
Oklahoma (9-0, 6-0 Big 12 South) had lost five of its last six games here, including a 30-26 setback two years ago when it was the top-ranked team in the country. The Sooners avenged that defeat with a 77-0 triumph last year, handing the Aggies their worst loss in school history.
Texas A&M (6-3, 4-2 South) held leads of 14-0, 21-7 and 28-14. With the game tied, 35-35, White, who won the Heisman Trophy last year, found Mark Bradley open across the middle and the receiver made a sharp cut and ran 39 yards for the go-ahead score.
"Jason had excellent protection again," Stoops said. "Jason hangs in there on the third-down play and finds Mark Bradley in the middle, and Mark splits them all and scores."
"I thought about running, trying to get into field-goal range," White said. "But Bradley came open right at the last second. I threw it to him and he made an outstanding catch and an outstanding play after the catch."
White has 16 touchdown passes and just one interception in his last four games. He completed 19-of-35 passes for 292 yards in this one.
After each team was forced to punt, the Aggies got back the ball at their own 11 with 1:08 left. Forced into duty late in the third quarter when Reggie McNeal sustained a right shoulder injury, Ty Branyon marched Texas A&M to the Oklahoma 33 with nine seconds left, but he was unsuccessful on two passes into the end zone.
On the second attempt, Branyon's pass was tipped by Aggies receiver L'Tyrick Riley, but it narrowly eluded teammate Chad Schroeder's grasp.
"We had time to go down and score," Branyon said. "But we didn't get it done."
"We always have confidence in our defense," White said. "We know they'll get a stop eventually and they did."
Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson ran 29 times for 101 yards, becoming the first freshman in NCAA history to rush for 100 yards in nine consecutive games. He exited the contest with a left shoulder injury with 7:23 left but returned to run one time for four yards.
McNeal went 11-of-24 for 213 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Aggies, who have lost back-to-back contests after a six-game winning streak. Last week - perhaps looking forward to the Sooners - they were upset at Baylor in overtime, 35-34.
The Aggies held a 21-14 lead when Jacob Young faked a punt on 4th-and-1 at the A&M 29 and tossed a short pass to Earvin Taylor, who scampered 71 yards for a score.
The Sooners scored 21 straight points and took a 35-28 lead on a two-yard pass from White to tight end James Moses with 8:41 left in the third quarter.
The Aggies evened the contest with 10:08 to play on a faked field goal as holder Schroeder tossed a four-yard TD strike to Joey Thomas.
"It's frustrating, especially when we're looking for them," Stoops said. "We have our defense out there looking for it and we don't get ourselves in position to defend it. ... It was a poor job of coaching on my part, not being able to handle those situations when we're looking for it." |
