Show: AD Police (1999)
Review by: Craig Burns

This takes places in the Bubblegum Crisis 2040 universe and happens a few years before the events in BGC 2040.  The show revolves around Kenji Sasaki and his partner Hans Kleif and their branch of the AD Police.  I won't go into details about the Bubblegum Crisis universe here, just that they are a police force dedicated to taking out rogue Boomers and operate separately from the normal police.

The story picks up with Kenji just as he looses his third partner.  Soon after he is joined by his new partner Hans and we go through the standard “breaking in” period.  After a few episodes of mindless Boomer battles in which supped up machines are completely inadequate against humans with hand guns, a plot starts to appear.

You don't have to be versed in BGC lore to understand this show.  You don't really have to be versed in anything to understand it, actually.  This is a rather plain police "drama" with a few sci-fi elements thrown in.  The characters are somewhat shallow and their relationships never really develop.  The one episode that does something with this is "Memory" but, by the end of the show, you really don't feel much for them one way or another.

Not memorable.  I don’t understand the discolored girl floating around during the ending sequence (I assume she is Keni's girlfriend).  She really has nothing to do with the story so, what?

The animation is average.  Boomers and flying mecha all look sort of muddy to me (my term for lumpy drawings with little details).

This show contains violence, language and police situations.  I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone under 13.  If you are a BGC fan, watch it but don’t expect a lot out it.  If not, you may want to pass on this one.

Favorite Scenes:

In "Bargaining" when Kenji and Hans are heavily outnumbered by military grade Boomers.  They run around in the open with their hand guns and annihilate them.  I think whoever is buying those Boomers may want to rethink their possible effectiveness.  What can I say, I had to laugh at this one.
