Extract (may contain spoilers)
Sarah swung round.  Facing her was a squat, powerful figure about the size of a small man.  Orange-green in colour, it had small, claw-like hands and feet.  There was no neck: the big high-domed head seemed to grow directly from the bulbous torso.  The face was terrifyingly alien, with huge, malevolent green eyes and a small, puckered mouth.  A row of protuberances ran down its back.  The really horrible thing about the creature was that it seemed to be a parody of the human form.  It looked like a grotesque, evil baby.

Sarah opened her mouth to scream, but even as she drew breath the creature reached out and grabbed her with its claw.  A force like a massive electric shock slammed Sarah against the wall, and she slid unconscious to the floor.

At UNIT H.Q. the Doctor spoke into the phone, 'Sarah?  Sarah, can you hear me?'  There was no answer.  He slammed down the receiver and turned to Benton.  'Something's happened to Sarah.  We'd better get over there at once.'

Thanks to some spectacular driving by the Doctor, they arrived in an amazingly short time.  They rushe into the sick bay to find Harry's bed empty, no sign of Sarah, and Sister Lamont fluttering about in a state of great agitation.  'I assure you, gentlemen, I was only gone a few minutes.  Dr Sullivan began to talk, you see, and Miss Smith went off to call you.  I waited and waited, and when she didn't come back, I was worried and went to look for her.  I couldn't find her anywhere - and when I got back, Dr Sullivan had gone too.'

'Maybe he woke up delirious, and wandered off somewhere,' said Benton.  'I'll get some men over and search the area.'

The Doctor nodded thoughtfully.  It'spossible - but what happened to Sarah?  Sister Lamont, will you show me this telephone she used?'

While Benton used his walkie-talkie to contact UNIT, Sister Lamont led the Doctor along the spotless white corridor to a telephone fixed to the wall.  'When I came along the telephone was just swinging on its cord.  I thought it odd at the time.'

'Nobody else was on duty?'

'No.  We're just a small establishment here.'

The Doctor stood quite still, apparently lost in thought.  He nodded towards a door further down the corridor.  'Where does that lead?'

'It's a decompression unit.  We sometimes need it for the company divers.  But it's always kept locked.'  Sister Lamont seemed struck by a sudden thought.  'You know, I've just remembered, I haven't looked in the dispensary.'  She hurried off in the other direction.

BORN-AGAIN ZYGONS

Investigating mysterious attacks on North Sea oil rigs, Doctor Who discovers that, yes, there really is a Loch Ness monster.

Half-animal and half-machine, it's the Skarasen, a monster-child of the exiled Zygons. They and their crippled spaceship have been in hiding for centuries. Now that they have regained their strength, the born-again but homeless Zygons plan to invade Earth, conquer its primitive peoples and stay on - as rulers.

Doctor Who is rather worried, even terrified, that the Zygons really might take over. Will Doctor Who be able to outwit the cunning strategies of the ruthless and dynamic Zygons in time to save us all?

Doctor Who is a mysterious, zany, a very mature Time Lord (750 years mature to be exact) who hurtles through space in a stolen Time Machine.  Since there's a problem with the steering, he never lands exactly when or where he plans to.    This, along with his desperate desire to bring law and order to the universe and his insatiable curiosity, consistently places him in strange and often perilous circumstances.

'THIS IS NO ORDINARY SEA SERPENT... WE'RE DEALING WITH A CYBORG!'

Summoned back to Earth by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the Doctor is asked to investigate a series of mysterious attacks on Scottish oil rigs. The culprit appears to be Nessie herself, but the monster turns out to be a Skarasen, the half animal, half machine creation of the Zygons. The Doctor, Sarah and Harry must stop the Zygons, some of whom have taken human form, from making Earth their new home planet.

Fact and Findings
This book was announced (but never published) as Doctor Who Meets the Loch Ness Monster. (The back cover for the original hardback release of Doctor Who and the Planet of the Spiders names it as such.)

First edition cover price - 40p

Classic chapter title: The Monster on the Moor (and a score of 1 / 12 on the exclamatiometer).

The January 1976 release was promoted within the January 1976 edition of Target Books, a promotional leaflet / booklet sent to book sellers to promote interest in forthcoming titles.

An original hardback edition, published by Allan Wingate Ltd, was released at the same time as the first paperback. It had the same artwork cover but with a light blue spine and back cover (advertising Planet of the Spiders and The Three Doctors). The ISBN was 0 85523 054 1 and the book cost £2.25. It was released by Wingate again in 1977, this time with a white spine and back cover. The ISBN remained the same but the price had gone up to £2.95.

The original edition was published by Tandem (ISBN 0 426 11041 2). It was reprinted later in 1976 (40p) and again in 1978, 1979 (W. H. Allen), 1982 and 1986. The ISBN remained the same.

In 1981, the book was recorded on tape for the visually impaired by the actor Gabriel Woolf.

From 1983 it was numbered 40 in the Doctor Who library.

The final edition was retitled Doctor Who -Terror of the Zygons, in keeping with the original TV serial, and was released on the 21st of March 1993, published by Virgin, priced £3.50 (ISBN 0 426 20391 7).

Although the Zygons only ever appeared in one TV serial, such was their popularity that the creatures have returned in the comic strip within Doctor Who Magazine and in spin-off BBV audio dramas. In literary fiction, they were one of the first monsters to "return" and threaten the Eighth Doctor, in the BBC novel The Bodysnatchers by Mark Morris (ISBN 0 563 40568 6).
Cover Data
The only slight change to the covers between 1976 and 1982 was a switch from blue to green for the logo and spine lettering.

A larger version of Achilleos's artwork appears in David J. Howe's book Timeframe (Virgin Publishing Ltd, 1993).

Alister Pearson's stunning cover artwork for the 1993 reprint was released as a postcard, free with 'Doctor Who Magazine' (number 214), July 1994. His portrait of Broton is particularly effective.
Foreign Editions
The American Pinnacle edition was number 6 in the series and was released in June 1979. It was on its seventh printing by January 1989, with minor alterations to the cover.

In October 1979, the Doubleday Book Club in America published a hardback compilation entitled The Adventures of Doctor Who. It used the Pinnacle versions (i.e. with Americanisms) of Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks, Doctor Who and the Revenge of the Cybermen and Doctor Who and the Loch Ness Monster. It included the introduction by Harlan Ellison and was available only to book club members.

  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
