The electric storm clawed and tore its way across the night sky like a wild animal, flaring suddenly into ripples of lightning more eerie and majestic than the three moons of Peladon.

Outside the throne room, the Doctor paused and turned back to let Jo join him at the head of the group.  He  smiled politely at Izlyr who was standing close behind him, and started to speak - but the sentence never came.  A fine drift of stone dust had fallen onto his cloak and, brushing it off, the Doctor looked upwards.  Almost in the same movement, with a speed of reflex that would have done credit to a wild animal, he hurled himself at the group behind him, bringing them down all of a heap.  They had not even reached the floor when the great stone image smashed into the ground beside them with a terrifying impact.

Peladon jumped to his feet and moved forward in alarm.  Before he could reach the door, Hepesh had checked him, his face full of foreboding.

'No, majesty - there is danger!  Wait!'

'But what has happened?' cried the young king, full of apprehension.  'If any of the delegates have been harmed...'  The rest of the sentence went unspoken, but the meaning was known to both the king and to Hepesh.  The aliens had weapons not yet seen in action on Peladon.  Their vengeance would surely be a terrible one.

'It is your majesty's safety that matters,' said Hepesh.  But his eyes were not on the king.  He was deliberately screening the return of Grun.  Like a shadow, the King's Champion glided to his royal master's side.  The king looked back at him, unaware that he had ever been away.  But, thought Hepesh grimly, how well had he succeeded?

The Doctor, helping Jo to her feet, turned to find Izlyr standing over him, hand extended

'You saved our lives, Doctor.'  His harsh, hissing voice sounded genuinely grateful, but the Doctor could read nothing from his mask-like face.

'Sorry I didn't have time to explain,' joked the Doctor, and moved across to the shattered statue, its terrifying face upwards to the smoky ceiling.  The guards nearby made no move to help.  They crouched, heads bowed, moaning with fear.

'This is outrageous,' wailed Alpha Centauri, tentacles thrashing about wildly.  'Terrible!  We could have been killed.'  The hexapod's colour was palpitating green and blue.

Arcturus was, as expected, unemotional.  He trundled close to the fallen statue.

'The gravitational forces involved were in excess of humanoid resistance,' he computed flatly.  'Serious damage would have resulted on impact.'

'Your objective reaction is admirable,' observed the Doctor drily, 'but you might've been killed too, Arcturus.'

'My sensor readings are not concerned with emotional response,' commented the mechanical voice, '- only deduction.'

'Even deductive processes can be annihilated,' said Izlyr, with icy reasoning.

'Alright, Jo?' asked the Doctor, seeing his young companion's drawn face grow even paler.

'Just a bit wobbly at the knees, that's all,' replied Jo bravely.  She suddenly found herself pushed aside by Hepesh, who stood staring down at the shattered stone image.

'Aggedor has been merciful,' he spoke bleakly, silently registering the fact that, thanks to this new Earthling delegate, not one of the aliens had been harmed.  He didn't allow his disappointment to show, however, as he raised his eyes to the Doctor's.  'We must give thanks that you have all been spared...'

'First Torbis dies,' observed Izlyr coldly.  'Nov this.'

'Yes,' agreed the Doctor, 'but why didn't the Aggedor manifestation actually appear?  Strange, that.'

'THIS IS THE TARDIS,' SNAPPED THE DOCTOR, 'NOT A NUMBER 88 BUS!'

The Doctor and Jo simply meant to take a little test ride in the TARDIS, to check that it was working. There was a small fault in the Interstitial Beam Synthesizer, perhaps, but nothing that couldn't be fixed...

But instead the TARDIS takes them to Peladon, a medieval world which is seeking membership of the Galactic Federation. Delegates have gathered on the planet from all ovr the galaxy, and among them are representatives from Alpha Centauri, from Arcturus and, from Mars, some of the Doctor's oldest and most dangerous enemies...

This is a novelization by Brian Hayles of his own original television story, which featured Jon Pertwee in the role of the Doctor.

Fact and Findings
The first novelisation by Brian Hayles, followed by Doctor Who and the Ice Warriors in 1976.

Classic chapter title: A Conspiracy of Terror

The January 1975 release was promoted within the January 1975 edition of Target Books, a promotional leaflet / booklet sent to book sellers to promote interest in forthcoming titles.

The only foreign edition of Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon was due to be released in Turkey in 1975. Entitled Doktor Kim ve Peladon Gezegeni (English translation: Doctor Who and the Peladon Planet), it was translated by Reha Pinar and was to be published by Remzi Kitabevi. However it seems this edition was never actually printed and released.

A hardback version came out much later than the original paperback, in July 1980. It was one of the "new breed" of hardbacks, with a laminated cover instead of a dustjacket. The artwork was by Bill Donohoe and was never used on a paperback edition. The book contained the same set of illustrations by Alan Willow. Published by W. H. Allen, it had ISBN 0 491 02783 4 and cost £3.95.

From 1983, the book was numbered 13 in the Doctor Who library.

The television sequel, The Monster of Peladon, was adapted by the script editor for both serials, Terrance Dicks.

All editions included six black and white illustrations by Alan Willow. The depiction of the Doctor battling with Grun on page 109 is curious - it bears no resemblance to anything seen on screen and even seems to contradict Hayles' written description: Jo looked down into the Pit. She had half-expected an arena rather like a Roman amphitheatre; flat, sandy, with steep walls and a cage-like entrance. The pit was very different. The floor was of highly polished granite so smooth that it reflected like a lake of still water... The wise editor at Target must have cottoned on to this as the illustration is four pages later.

Sarah Hadley's Target Practice article which includes a detailed comparison of novelisation with TV version can be read here.

The original edition was published by Universal-Tandem (30p, ISBN 0 426 10452 8). Reprinted in 1976 (Tandem, 40p, ISBN 0 426 11498 1), 1979 (white Pertwee/Baker logo, 75p, ISBN 0 426 11084 6), 1980 (brown Pertwee/Baker logo, W. H. Allen/Wyndham, 75p, ISBN 0 426 20061 6), 1982, 1984 (£1.35, ISBN 0 426 11498 1) and 1992. Retitled Doctor Who - The Curse of Peladon for its release in June 1992, this final edition was published by Virgin (ISBN 0 426 11498 1, £2.99).

The first novelisation by Brian Hayles, followed by Doctor Who and the Ice Warriors in 1976.

In 1995 an abridged version of the novel was read by Jon Pertwee and released on the BBC Radio Collection as a single 90 minute cassette. Pertwee also recorded Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks. The other books recorded for the BBC Radio Collection were Doctor Who - Kinda, Doctor Who - Warriors of the Deep (both read by Peter Davison), Doctor Who - Attack of the Cybermen and Doctor Who - Vengeance on Varos (both read by Colin Baker).
Cover Data
A larger version of Achilleos's original artwork appears in David J. Howe's book Timeframe (Virgin Publishing Ltd, 1993).

The 1979 cover and 1980 cover differed from the first edition simply by substituting the Pertwee/Baker logo for the black block lettered original. There were two versions, a white one and a brown one.

The July 1980 hardback edition featured a cover by Bill Donohoe that was never used on a paperback release.

Alister Pearson's cover artwork for the 1992 reprint was released as a postcard, free with 'Doctor Who Magazine' (number 209), February 1994.
Foreign Editions
The only foreign edition of Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon was released in Turkey in 1975. Entitled Doktor Kim - ve Peladon Gezegeni, it was translated by Reha Pinar and published by Remzi Kitabevi.
Reviews
"Brian Hayles opted to do The Curse of Peladon as Pertwee was his favourite Doctor and Curse his favourite script. As with the books by the rest of this 'team', Hayles chose to flesh the story out, but instead of adding scenes will-nilly and lots of descriptions, he fleshed out his characters and the history (and possible future) of Peladon... One character who benefits tremendously on the printed page is the hermaphrodite Alpha Centauri - his changes of colour as well as mood (i.e. from just very frightened to downright terrified) are beautifully described. The Curse of Peladon is one of the best books in the whole Target range."

BRIAN HAYLES

Brian Hayles was born in Portsmouth in 1931. He trained as a sculptor and taught art for some years before becoming a full-time writer for television and radio. He contributed TV scripts to Public Eye, The Regiment, Z-Cars, Out of the Unknown and Doomwatch amongst others.

He wrote six Doctor Who adventures in the 1960s and 1970s (The Celestial Toymaker, The Smugglers, The Ice Warriors, The Seeds of Death, The Curse of Peladon and The Monster of Peladon). Two of these he adapted for Target books.

Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon
Doctor Who and the Ice Warriors

As well as script-writing for long-running BBC Radio 4 soap The Archers, Hayles also wrote a novel based on lives in the fictional village of Ambridge between the World Wars. Spring at Brookfield was published in 1975, in hardback by Allan Wingate and in paperback by Target books' parent-publisher Tandem. The book was rejacketed later when the company was owned by Wyndham.

  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.
  • This is currently unfinished, but a work in progress...
