This is another paradox story.  A different twist on this one but still, done to death.  There is a tie in with The Burning though.
Synopsis (may contain spoilers)
This is the 60th novel published by the BBC to feature the 8th Doctor.  His companions are Fitz Kreiner and Anji Kapoor.

The Doctor has dropped off Fitz in the 1800's to journey to Siberia.  He has also dropped Anji off in 21st century London, three weeks after she originally left, to continue her life.

Fitz meets up with dangerous dinosaur like creatures from an alternate reality that have passed into the 'real' world.  Anji gets taken by a group of Americans to capture a time machine that does not exist.  The Doctor just happens to be going there too.

Fitz dies (or maybe he doesn't) and there are two possibilities created in the same universe.  Before Fitz dies, he uses a grenade near a black hole to release an incredible amount of energy that causes the 'split.'  The Doctor and Anji work together with some of the visitors to stop the American commando team, on orders from Control,  from killing everyone.

Fitz is liberated from the 'possibility' trap and everything is put to rights.  Sabbath's hand is revealed in the paradox.  He leaves on the Jonah, but not before the Doctor, Anji and Fitz see them.

When the Doctor stops off to see that a certain event that happened in the past will happen again, they discover that they have entered into an alternate universe and that they must not return Anji to London.  They must put wrong to right again…

Extract (may contain spoilers)
A man stands.  Frozen in time.  The chill breeze from the open door ripples the cracked pages of the book he holds.
The Doctor hesitates.  Should he buy the book anyway?  A curiosity?  A coincidence?  Or a distraction.  He has more than enough to do.
With a sudden dust-clouding movement that makes the old woman blink and shiver, he snaps the book shut.  He refolds his piece of paper, a quick well-practised routine.
And he reaches out to replace the book on the shelf.
The book slides easily into its dusty place.  But the Doctor hesitates, the book half-in and half-out.  A decision, a turning point.  If he leaves it now, he will never know for sure.  And what does he have to lose?
He pulls the book out again, and turns to smile at the old woman counting the money.

It doesn't take the creation of a whole new universe just to kill a cat.'

With Fitz gone to his certain death and Anji back at work in the City, the Doctor is once more alone. But he has a lot to keep him occupied.

At the Naryshkin Institute in Siberia, scientists are busily at work in a haunted castle. Over a century earlier, creatures from a prehistory that never happened attack a geological expedition. Pages from the lost expedition's journal are put on display at the British Museum, and a US spy plane suffers a mysterious fate. Deep under the snowy landscape of Siberia the key to it all remains trapped in the ice.

Only the Doctor can see that these events are all related. But he isn't the only person involved. Why is Colonel Hartford so interested in the Institute? Who is the mysterious millionaire who is after the journal? How is the Grand Duchess, descendant of the last Tsar, involved?

Soon the Doctor is caught up in a polt that reaches back to the creation of the Universe. And beyond...

...to Time Zero.

Justin Richards

Notes:
From the back of the book Time Zero

Justin Richards has no cat.  He might (or might not) have had a cat when he was a child, but if he did he never ever put it in a box.  He does have two children, but that's not the same thing at all.  Believe me, if you have a cat and you're thinking of trading up for kids, there is a big difference.

When he isn't busy with his children, Justin acts as Creative Consultant to BBC Worldwide's various Doctor Who book ranges as well as doing some writing of his own - novels, audios, television, non fiction and other 'stuff'.  Presumably this is done during the time he would have had to spend with the cat, so given that Justin never has enough time for writing, he's thinking of not getting another one.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
