A hellhound gets loose and attacks a man in formal wear in front of Cordelia and Xander.  Angel tells Buffy that he must leave her after the ascenscion (if they survive) becuase their relationship could never work out.  Buffy decides that she will take on the hellhounds by herself so that the others can enjoy the prom.
