From 1969 to 1972 the Division for Girls' and Women's Sports (DGWS) recognized the Women's College World Series (WCWS) as organized by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). In 1973 the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) took over responsibilities until 1982. In 1982 there were two separate World Series tournaments when the NCAA held their first one the same year.
