   March of Dimes Founded
The March of Dimes was founded by President Franklin D Roosevelt as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.  It was originally set up to fight against the polio epidemic. The name "March of Dimes" was created by Eddie Cantor in his radio campaign and was a play on words of "The March of Time" which was a  popular newsreel at the time.  After Jonas Salk's polio vaccine became available, the organization expanded to focus on birth defects and premature births.
